About OI Lead Initiative
Since August 2025, Otermans Institute has launched the OI Lead initiative, beginning in Kenya. The programme offers a structured course of nine lessons on AI Literacy, delivered by digital human teachers.The OI Lead initiative is designed to equip young learners with essential digital skills for the future. Following its successful implementation in Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, South Africa, and Sri Lanka, the programme is now available worldwide. It is open to registered NGOs, charities, schools, and public institutions, requires no prior AI experience, and provides certification, rewards, and career-building opportunities for students.In Kenya alone, OI Lead has already reached over 200,000 learners, making it one of Africa’s fastest-growing education programmes. It has empowered youth across all 47 counties, including those in arid and semi-arid regions where internet access and AI-related courses are scarce.

Who can participate

NGOs, charities, schools, and public institutions

Applicants must be actively engaged in the education sector or demonstrate clear goals to empower marginalised communities, with at least one team member based in the country.

Learners

Aged 16 to 35, fluent in English, and have access to an internet enabled device with at least 4GB of RAM (tablet, phone, laptop, but no iOS)

How does it work

Eligibility

FAQ

What is the ‘OI Lead’ initiative?
The OI Lead initiative by Otermans Institute offers free AI-focused lessons delivered through advanced AI teachers, designed to equip young Kenyans aged 16–24 with essential digital and artificial-intelligence skills. Learners who complete the programme receive an official digital certificate and gain access to career-building rewards and opportunities.
How do we apply?
Eligible NGOs and educational organisations can apply by completing the official online registration form. Applications must include the organisation’s registration details and a 90-second video explaining why your organisation and learners should be selected for the OI Lead AI Literacy Programme.
How many learners must each NGO enroll?
Each approved organisation may enrol up to 5,000 learners. Participants must be aged 16–24, fluent in English, and have access to an internet-enabled Android phone, tablet, or laptop. (Note: iOS devices are not supported.)
How is the programme delivered?
All lessons are delivered through Otermans Institute’s AI-powered learning platform. Course materials and assignments can be accessed offline, allowing learners to study at their own pace. Internet access is only required to download the official Otermans Institute app.
What certification will learners receive?
Learners who complete all lessons will receive an official digital certificate from Otermans Institute, recognising their understanding of core AI concepts and digital literacy skills. This credential supports both academic progression and career development in technology and innovation
Is there any cost to participate?
No. The OI Lead initiative is completely free of charge—including lessons, materials, certification, and rewards. Otermans Institute and its partners are committed to making AI education accessible to young people across Kenya.
What is the ‘OI Lead’ initiative?
From 1 to 31 August, Otermans Institute will deliver eight free, AI-focused lessons using its AI teachers to equip young Kenyans (aged 16–24) with essential digital and artificial-intelligence skills. On successful completion, learners receive official certification and access to further rewards and career-building opportunities.
How do we apply ?
Complete the online registration form  between 15 June and 11 July. You must provide your organisation’s registration details along with a concise 90-second video explaining why your organisation and your learners should be selected.
How many learners must each NGO enroll?
Every organisation can enroll up to 5,000 learners. Learners should be aged 16–24, fluent in English, with access to an internet-enabled tablet, Android phone or laptop (iOS devices are not supported).
How is the programme delivered?
All nine lessons are delivered online. Course materials and assignments are accessible without internet, so learners can work at their own pace on compatible devices (tablet, Android phone or laptop). Learners need to access internet only to download the app provided by Otermans Institute.
What certification will learners receive?
Learners who successfully complete all 9 lessons will be awarded an official digital certificate by 8 September. This certificate recognises their comprehensive understanding of core AI concepts, serving as a valuable credential for further academic pursuits and real-world applications.
Is there any cost to participate?
No. The entire programme—including lessons, materials, certification and rewards—is entirely free of charge.
